Chapter 15 of "Just Cause" is Out!

Today on Kids and Fish Who Are Having a Worse Day Than You, my Undertale fanfic, Just Cause, now has a new chapter!

You can read chapter 15 on my website here.

Or you can read it on on AO3 here.

Here's a quick excerpt:

A few seconds before his boss was supposed to arrive, Sans teleported to his Hotland sentry station.

The moment he materialized, the sound that greeted him made him almost wish he’d stayed away.

“Come on, is that all you’ve got!?”

As Undyne’s strained, struggling voice drifted through the cavern and washed across him, grim resignation pulled Sans’ eyelids closed.

The kid might actually be killing her.

I’d hoped they were past that.

Just Cause, Chapter 14: Spear of Torment

4/9/2022

Chapter 14 of Just Cause is out! You can read it on this website here, or read it on Archive of Our Own here.

Here's a quick peek at the chapter:

“And all the pain you have inflicted on the fallen… Every hope, every dream you have turned to dust… She’s gonna send right back through her spear! NGAHHH! I’ll show you how determined monsters truly are. Come on! Step forward and let’s end this!”

This is it.

Cold, dull resignation fell like a stone into the churning pool of Frisk’s thoughts, sending waves of emotion rippling in all directions and crashing into each other.

She isn’t going to stop this time, is she? She isn’t like those other monsters who attacked me for a stupid, petty reason. She has a really good reason to want to kill me.

And she’ll keep on trying until one of us is dead.

Should I kill her?

More "Just Cause," More Excerpts!

I’m releasing chapter 14 of my Undertale story, Just Cause, this week, so here are a few excerpts from the upcoming chapter. :)

You can read the first 13 chapters of Just Cause here, or read the webcomic version here.

My supporters on Patreon can read chapter 14 today.

As the smoothness of the carefully-carved path gave way to the harsh edges of a small mountain, and a gust of wind turned the tunnel ahead into a shrieking maw, a surge of adrenaline and dread turned Frisk’s pulse into a pounding tide.

The dull red glare of the firelit ceiling loomed high above, turning the buildings and machines into ominous silhouettes, and closer – far, far too close – a smaller but vastly more perilous figure stood motionless on the mountaintop.

A spark of anger flared through the fog of fear, and this time the curl of their toes whispered of a desire to use the shoes they gripped for a purpose other than running away.

The edge of pain in the monster’s voice cut through the haze of rage like a spear, and the memories that followed it warped what remained of their indignation into gut-twisting guilt.

It was clear that Undyne was going to wait until Frisk made the first move. Still, the human hesitated, caught between a retreat that offered no escape and a battle they didn’t know how to wage.

Chapter 13 of "Just Cause" is Out!

Could it be... that I've finally updated my Undertale fanfiction, Just Cause?!

It could indeed! Here's a quick excerpt from the latest chapter, Mutual Protection:

“Understand, human?”

Undyne’s stern, frigid voice cut through their thoughts, and they nodded numbly, trembling as they absorbed the enormity of the revelation.

The king of the Underground wanted them dead, and there was nowhere they could go where people wouldn’t be trying to fulfill his command.

“This is your only chance at redemption,” Undyne continued, her golden eye burning a hole in the child’s reeling mind. “Give up your soul… or I’ll tear it from your body.”

In this speedpaint, I'm designing Kivara the Charishi kitten, a chaotic little member of a feline species in my fantasy short story and upcoming novel, Upholding the Covenant.

While I design her, I'll be sharing cute and funny Kivara moments, new facts about Charishi culture and biology, and insights into how the jock baby's friendship with nerd ambassador Orennian developed.

Character Design Reveal: Kivara the Charishi Kitten!

20/3/2022

She's here! That horrible, adorable little fur monster I've been posting about finally has a face to go with the shenanigans.

Guys, gals, and nonbinary pals, I'd like you to meet Kivara, the Charishi kitten from my short story and upcoming novel, Upholding the Covenant.
Picture
This picture put up a heck of a fight, which is appropriate for a kitten who will try to fight ANYTHING from loudly dropped boxes to thunderstorms.

You'd think an artist who's lived with cats almost my whole life would know how to draw them, but nope, I did not. At all. So this picture was a total learning curve for me, and it looked like ass until I added the stripes. After that, it all started coming together.

I had a rough idea of what Kivara looks like, but a lot of the details needed to be ironed out and experimented with on the fly, so I was actually designing Kivara while I drew her.

I decided to record the process for a speedpaint, which I'll release soon, and even though I did a rough practice round before starting to record in earnest, the parts I recorded still added up to almost six hours.

And that's not even including the bits of tinkering I did while the second-last video was rendering and I thought I was done (before I realized the ears needed fixing), and widening her raised forelimb to match the planted one!

Still, I'm glad I stuck with it, and didn't let that struggle be the final word on whether or not I could introduce Kivara's cute, bratty face to the world. I think this picture captures not only her appearance, but her alert, energetic, inquisitive and mischievous personality.

Designing not just a character, but a species.

Kivara is the first Charishi I've ever drawn, so to some extent I was figuring out their traits as a species while I was drawing her.

I wanted to give the Charishi more distinctive physical features to differentiate them from real-life felines and make them more unique, but so far, most of the ideas I've had just haven't felt right. The one thing that did stick was those big, triangular tufts of fur on the ends of their rounded ears.

Speaking of which, Charishi ears aren't normally that huge; Kivara's just special that way. She's the runt of the litter, but she has the voice, ears and attitude of a much larger creature, haha.

As she grows, her forelimbs' digits will elongate into fingers, and she'll start to shift to a bipedal stance as her default way of walking. But she'll still be able to drop to all fours for a startling burst of speed!

She'll also start to wear clothes; I need to figure out what kind of outfits the Charishi wear. Probably some sort of loose, roughly knee-high robe that can comfortably accommodate both bipedal and quadrupedal locomotion.

If you like this bratty baby enough to bring her into your house, you can get Kivara on T-shirts, stickers, coffee mugs and more in my RedBubble and Society6 stores!

And if you want to learn more about Kivara, her species, and the world she lives in, you can follow me on social media to get notified when I share more updates.

Another Round Of Sweet Kivara and Orennian Moments

19/2/2022

More cute moments with this precious pair of goofballs from my upcoming novel, Upholding the Covenant, brought to you by this week's round of #SlapDashSat Tweets. :)

1.
“What’s in your mouth?”

The kitten’s eyes went wide, her ears flattened against her head, and as she hastily scuttled under the bed, Orennian sighed. “Apparently it’s something you aren’t supposed to have.”

2.
The kitten sniffed at his mouth, and Orennian wondered if this was a sign of affection.

Then she shoved her whole head between his teeth, grabbed the candy he’d been sucking on, and fell into his lap with her stolen prize.

3.
“That,” Orennian said sternly, thrusting a finger toward the kitten’s face, “was not good.”

Kivara stared at his finger for a moment, then affectionately rubbed her cheek against it, and the scolding words died in his throat.

4.
Orennian’s favorite way to wake Kivara was to place a ramekin of pudding next to her nose. She would sniff, twitch and lick in her sleep, until she awoke and her face lit up upon seeing that the pudding was real.

5.
“Kivara, I know you’re angry at the water for making you cold and wet, but slapping it and hissing at it will only make you wetter.”

I hope you enjoyed these Tweet-sized excerpts. If you want to read more funny catgirl stories while you wait for Upholding the Covenant to come out, check out my other novel, Catgirl Roommate.

More Cute Orennian and Kivara Moments

12/2/2022

Time for some more cute, Tweet-sized moments from my upcoming novel, Upholding the Covenant:

1.
As Orennian walked past the play pen, the smallest kitten stuck her arms between the bars and wiggled them furiously, mewing for his attention at the top of her tiny lungs.

2.
For all her bravado, Kivara could still get overwhelmed. She didn't always voice the feeling, but when the feline toddler's ears went down and she started to suck the knuckle of her thumb, Orennian knew it was time to pick her up and hug her.

3.
Almost every day, when his work was done, Orennian went shopping. He'd forgotten something yesterday. He wanted fresher food. There was always an excuse.

His bodyguards said nothing, but they knew he just wanted to see the kittens again.

4.
Orennian flared his cobra-like hood, watching as the kitten's ears perked toward him.

He flattened one side of his hood, and one of her ears went down. He closed the other side, and both ears dropped.

He tilted his head, and she fell over.

5.
"If you want to see my kittens so badly, you could just visit them. No need to pretend to shop."

"I'm glad to hear that."

"Of course, to hold one, you must make a purchase. ...Haha, I jest. Purchase or no, Kivara will climb you all the same."
