Layers of the World
For my latest pride flag cutout art series, I wanted to try something more ambitious. Instead of having a single theme for the pattern, I drew seven different layers of the world.
For those who are curious, I created this by placing a layer of black on top of the color layer, then erasing holes in the darkness, allowing the colors of the flags and the pastel rainbow background to shine through. I also added spots and shimmers of white to give it brightness and texture. Rainbow Whims
Sometimes I go into a drawing with a clear, specific plan. And other times, such as this one, it's just a series of rainbow whims, weaving together one at a time until they create something beautiful.

Stormy Swirls and Shower of Sapphire Snowflakes
This snowflake series is my favorite shade of my favorite color, and it took quite a bit of tinkering to make a background that complemented the beautiful mid-tone blue without drowning it out.
The dramatic, stormy swirl of mist is one of my earlier attempts; it looks beautiful, but its striking contrasts demanded attention, drawing my focus away from the snowflakes. So I decided to split this artwork in two: the bold, misty background in one picture, and a more muted version of it covered in snowflakes in the other. Veil of Butterflies, Pride Flag Series
I decided it was high time I made another pride flag pattern, and Veil of Butterflies was perfect for it. I like using butterflies for LGBTQIA+ patterns, because these beautiful creatures symbolize evolving into your fullest, most vibrant and visible self.
By adding the extra layer of butterflies in the background, I made sure that each color on each flag would be given ample chance to shine. Veil of Butterflies
I recently saw a simple but striking pattern consisting of a light blue background, a slightly darker pattern of leaves on top of it, and a second, even darker pattern of leaves on top of that.
I wanted to try something similar, so I pulled out my trusty butterfly shape and started filling the canvas with wings. I started with a blue version, then tinkered with the coloring to create green, red, purple, monochromatic, and rainbow versions. Sparkling Mother of Pearl
On Mother's Day, my mother came up to me with a picture on her phone and asked, "Can you make something kind of like this, but with lots of sparkles, and put it on a phone case?"
So I put spots and streaks of the colors she'd requested on a blue-grey canvas, and started tinkering with the liquefier tool, occasionally making adjustments at her request. Then I added the sparkles she so enjoys - one of the star layers was called "BLING OUT THE WAZOO". I thought of calling this image "Sparkling Angel Mist", but given its connection to mothers and Mother's Day, I wanted to have "mother" in the title. Psychedelic Sunset Silhouette
After browsing some surreal art, I wanted to try drawing a wavy pink tree in front of an ominous red sunset.
I thought about shading the trees, but I kind of like the otherworldly look their near lack of shading gives, like they aren't quite part of the same reality as the clouds. After I made the initial version, I played around with the colors, and the blue version was born. Burst of Burgundy Blossoms
For this piece of art, I wanted to try a dark, elegant, floral twist on my usual snowflake patterns. I'd originally envisioned a winding tangle of vines, but it ended up being more of a sharp, straight starburst of flower-studded leaves shooting out from the center.

Contained Chaos
I wanted to experiment with patterns and shapes, so I drew a graceful, swirling lattice of thick, curving lines, then filled each gap between them with whatever pattern suited it.
It was a creative challenge to find enough different varieties to fill them all, while keeping the whole piece balanced so that the patterns complemented each other and none of them felt too crowded compared to the others. Sky and Silhouettes
I was admiring the stark, simple beauty of silhouetted trees against an evening sky, and I wanted to try drawing them.
While I was drawing these trees, I shaped them so that if you tiled the image, the silhouettes would neatly connect with each other into a single coherent network of trunks and branches. Rainbow StarFlower
While playing Sayonara Wild Hearts, I was inspired by the combination of a dark foreground and pastel rainbow cutouts they used in some of their art.
I decided to try combining that with a symmetrical pattern, and I love the soft, ethereal effect it created. Flowers and Frames
This artwork was inspired by a photo with an interesting floor pattern in it. I wanted to try drawing something similar, but obviously with my own spin on it.
I initially meant for the silver decorations to be abstract and symbolic, but as I worked, I found myself being drawn to more semirealistic floral shapes. After I finished the grey and gold version, I felt like the pattern had a lot of untapped potential that I could bring out by using different color schemes, so I tried a few other variations and ended up really liking them. Swirls and Silk
This series began with a simple concept: I thought an interconnected series of silver spirals would look beautiful and elegant against a dark green background.

Forest of Snails
I wanted to do a relaxing art project that gave me room to play with pretty colors and patterns, so I decided to take a few basic snail shapes and see how creative I could get with their shell markings.
At first I was going to leave the vines without outlines, but it just looked weird to have the snails outlined and the vines not. I also added leaves because the vines looked naked and the picture felt incomplete without them. I initially tried using puffy clouds, but that didn't quite look right. So I made the clouds look windswept, and the picture finally felt complete. The 2020 civil rights movement against police brutality has been occupying a lot of space in my mind and conversations lately, and I thought it was time for me to put some of my thoughts into text art so others who feel the same way can show it if they want.

Fly With Pride: Dragon Series
I wanted a badass winged creature for my latest pride flag pattern, and what better candidate than a fire-breathing dragon?
I started working on this dragon series in June 2020, and while I was in the process of drawing it, I was informed that that year's Pride Month had been swapped out for Wrath Month. The timing felt so perfect. If you're interested in seeing how this dragon took shape, my supporters on Patreon can see the works in progress here. Ruby Flowers, Emerald Vines
This pattern started out with far fewer flowers, no yellow lights, and a blue background.
But after some experimenting, I concluded that the black background and lights helped the image pop, and having a thicker concentration of blossoms helped to ensure that all the parts of the various products would have flowers on them. Velvet and Vines
I was working on a floral pattern, and after I drew the vines, I realized their graceful, weaving curls would probably look great on clothing and decor by themselves if I turned them gold.

Shining Skies, Woven Gold
After drawing so many snowflakes with a wide brush, I wanted to try a different style.

Frozen Zephyr
When I drew this, it had been some time since I did a snowflake-drawing montage, and I was getting the urge to do it again.
With COVID-19 forcing so many people into quarantine, I also felt a pull as an artist to offer those who are trapped in their homes a bit of escape and entertainment. Golden Sky Symbols and Colored Clouds
This pattern was inspired by the odd combination of the magic from Dr. Strange and a facial tissue box.
The latter was covered in blotches of pink, blue and purple in the background, with many-spoked golden wheels in the foreground. That pattern made me want to try creating a cleaner-looking, more complex version of it, while the 2016 Dr. Strange movie gave me the idea of adding symbols between the spokes. When I showed this pattern to my mother, she commented that its background looked like something she'd like on a dress. So I thought "Hey, why not upload that as well?" Silver and Sapphires
This image started with a general concept of what I wanted the main central spokes to look like, then from there it was a matter of experimenting to see what looked and felt right.
In a way, it reminds me of "Starry JewelVine", one of the first symmetrical patterns I drew, in that it has wires of a metallic color enclosing gem-like patches of jewel tones. "Silver and Sapphires" is definitely more polished, and I'm proud of the progress I've made. You can find all the RedBubble items with "Silver and Sapphires" on them here. Web of Leaves and Light
I was starting to miss doing symmetrical snowflake-type patterns, so I decided it was time to do another one, this time with 8 dendrites instead of the usual 6.
Once the central leaf pattern was done, I tinkered with the background, adding the dark blue threads and some smaller copies of the plant in the corners. After that, it still didn't look complete, so I added some green vines, and then brightened it up with a scattering of fireflies. At that point, it seemed almost done, but still a little too flat; there wasn't enough contrast between the plant and the colors behind it, so I added a dappling of darker blue. I'm happy with the way this one evolved - from a single plant floating like a lily pad, to a twinkling forest drifting in the depths. You can see all the RedBubble items with this pattern here. Glitches in the Void
I had a random thought that a bunch of L shapes on a black background would look cool on clothes and pillows. And of course, I had do it in several different colors for good measure. :)
I'd originally planned to have fewer L shapes, and to have a gradient on each one, but then I went and zoomed in to make some of the shapes and ended up packing them way tighter than I'd originally intended, and making a lot more of them. The effect was quite different than I'd originally intended, but I think it still looks cool. Fly With Pride Finale: Butterfly Bonanza
After a couple weeks of working on my "Fly With Pride" series, I wanted it to go out with a bang.
I thought it would be great to have a version of the pattern with a richer, fuller look, so I used a night sky background with all 17 versions of the butterfly soaring together in a densely packed kaleidoscope of almost 100 individual flyers. (Also, this week I learned that a group of butterflies is called a kaleidoscope.) I'd originally planned to have the butterflies layered on top of each other and overlapping, but that got visually confusing, so I went with the starry sky instead. Fly With Pride
It's been a while since I made a pride flag series, so I decided it was about time to do another one.
This butterfly's stained glass wings include a few symbolic elements: - Hearts, to represent love. This could mean romantic love, platonic friendship, or the self-love required to take the time to truly understand yourself and accept your unique orientation, gender identity, and other traits. - Diamonds, which can represent engagement rings, strength, value, and - if you're into Homestuck - the nonsexual romance of moiraillegiance. - Leaf shapes, to represent life and growth. These butterflies are available on T-shirts, blankets, art prints, coffee mugs and more in Society6 and RedBubble. Society6 continues to lack a "view all items with this art on them" option, but you can see my latest products from newest to oldest here. And here are the RedBubble links to each version of the butterfly: Agender Androgyne Aromantic Asexual Bisexual Demiboy Demigirl Genderfluid Genderqueer Intersex Lesbian LGBTQ Neutrois Nonbinary Pansexual Polysexual Transgender In the collage, you can see what a few versions of this butterfly look like on some of the available products. Emerald, Magenta and Sapphire Scales
In a recent blog post, I commented that I wondered how Regal Scales would look in green. So I tried it, and it looked so good that I tried it in blue, then purple... and I liked all three of them so much that I decided to keep them.

I wanted to try another scaled pattern, like "Earthen Scales, Golden Streams" and "Golden Diamonds, Rainbow Void", but with curved shapes and a more intricate pattern on each scale this time. I started with the single-scale version above, then turned it into the overlapping pattern below.

Lilac Lace and Pastel Party
You know that thing some artistic children do, when they scribble a random shape into MS Paint and then fill in the gaps? That's basically what I did here.
It started with the idea that I wanted a blue and purple background with a yellow symmetrical pattern in the foreground, and maybe some pink here and there for flavor. I wan't planning on making a snowflake this time - more like the shields the Masters of the Mystic Arts create in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The trouble was, I wasn't sure what pattern to use for the purple part. I tried clouds, rectangular glitch effects, blotchy textures... nothing felt right. Eventually I selected the multibrush tool, set it to 20 brushes, chose a soft-edged brush, and basically started scribbling, adding whatever doodles and shapes felt right in any given spot. By the time I was done, it looked so nice that I didn't want to cover it up. So I ditched the shield idea, and instead started filling some of the gaps between the purple lines with pink and yellow, then added green when I felt like something was missing. In the end, I liked both versions - the muted yet elegant blue-and-purple lace, and the more vibrant explosion of pastel colors - so I decided to keep both. I might still use the shield idea for a future pattern, but first I'll have to figure out what kind of background to give it. You can see all the RedBubble items with Lilac Lace here, and the ones with Pastel Party here. Scattered Flowers and Butterflies
I wanted to try a less symmetrical pattern comprised of simpler shapes this time, and this was the result. When I put it in my Society6 and RedBubble stores, I included both this blue option and a transparent option, so people have choices.
I also made a version of the picture with the various elements rearranged, so they'll look good on clothes that use a single image on the front as opposed to all-over print. You can see all the RedBubble items with the transparent background here, and the ones with the blue background here. Spaceborne Orchid Snowflake
I went into this pattern with basically no plan except for "purple snowflake on a red background".
As it turns out, that's garish. Eye-bleedingly garish. So I replaced the red background with a deep blue, and used the red for something I haven't tried before: a snowflake behind the main snowflake, this time using "normal" mode for the brush instead of my usual "screen". I wasn't sure I liked the way it looked until I experimented with lightening the sky a bit, and tried adding in the teal. It didn't really work as part of the sky, but I was surprised by how well it fit as part of the snowflake. I still did end up brightening the sky, but subtly, with a faint dappling of lighter blue. Onyx Beams of Flowers and Gems
This was one of those patterns that stayed pretty close to its original concept, except for the part where it strayed at the outset.
I initially pictured a more fluid, chaotic spray of black streams, whose widths varied a bit more, with blue-white flowers in them and a sky-blue background. But I also wanted it to look good when tiled, which required keeping the streams the same width at the edges where they intersected. The result was a simpler, more orderly pattern than I'd originally planned. The darker blue between the diamond shapes was an afterthought, once I got to the stage where the basics were done and I was tinkering to see what looked good. It was designed primarily for how it would look as a tiled pattern on clothing, but I'm happy with how it looks on a variety of non-tiled items as well. Here's what it looks like on some of the available items. You can see all the RedBubble items with this pattern here. Earthen Scales, Golden Streams
I went in a different direction with my latest piece of art; instead of a pattern, this one is more of a texture, designed more for the way it will look on items than the way it looks by itself.
It was inspired by the veined coral shell plates in Subnautica,. Even though they're not a color scheme I'm normally attracted to, I still think they're gorgeous, and I wanted to see what they look like on physical items in a diamond pattern. Frozen Floating Flower
I wanted to do something simpler for my next pattern, so I went with a flower instead of a snowflake.
I originally planned to make the petals almost solid white, with dark blue markings on them and pointier green leaves behind them. But after a few brush strokes there was more lingering purple than I'd expected, and I liked the effect, so I kept it. The pointy leaves looked OK, but they felt at odds with the rest of the picture, so I changed them to a more lily pad-like appearance to go with the watery background. Symmetrical Sea
I was recently looking over Mom's shoulder while she relaxed with a symmetrical pattern coloring book, and it inspired me to go in a completely different direction with my latest pattern.
This time, instead of using colors exclusively, I started with lineart:
This time, instead of using colors exclusively, I started with lineart:
And rather than making the entire pattern one coherent shape, I built it out of different interlocking shapes, all with an ocean/beach theme.
Then I colored it in, mostly using colors one would normally find on a beach, to make it easier to distinguish which element of the design is which.

Sea of Shining Seaweed
I felt like doing another botanical snowflake pattern, this time with more of a marine theme. It ended up not looking much like a snowflake; I wanted it to look good when tiled, so I added a bunch of extra vines and leaves to the outer edges to make it connect nicely to adjacent tiles.
Here's what it looks like when tiled:

The slightly luminous yellow bulbs were inspired by the creepvines in the kelp forests of Subnautica. It also crossed my mind that the color scheme is reminiscent of Loki - probably because I was watching the first Avengers movie while I drew this, haha.

Woven Vines of Silver and Life
This picture is a bit of a departure from my usual snowflake patterns; my long-time friend and Patreon supporter, Mica, wanted a pattern with a lighter background, and requested a color scheme of white, teal and grey, preferably with a botanical theme.
She asked, I delivered, and here it is. The concept for the snowflake came easily; I drew a woven snowflake pattern with a simple brush, then added leaves onto it. The background, on the other hand, fought me every step of the way. I experimented with one thing after another, and they all looked wrong, until I tried this. Subtracting Night from Rainbows Series
I recently watched a course on SkillShare called The Art of Subtraction. It teaches people how to draw background patterns and textures for their art, then give shape to their creation by erasing portions of it.
I've already used a similar method for pieces like "Chaotic Hearts", but the class gave me ideas for how to expand on the technique, so I decided to complete the class project - which is, create 3-5 pieces of artwork by subtracting from a drawing. The result was this 3-part art series, "Subtracting Night from Rainbows". The upper left image is an example of my drawing process, in which I started by making a black layer, then added a layer of color on top of it, then another black layer above that. After that, I used the eraser to remove parts of the upper black layer, thus revealing the colors beneath in my chosen shapes. The other images, in clockwise order, are "Maid of Stars and Rainbows", "Butterflies and SnowFlowers", and "Forest of Weeping Jewels". The links lead to the images' respective RedBubble pages. Chaotic Hearts, Pride Series
Quite a while ago, I made a print-on-demand pattern called "Chaotic Hearts". While I was uploading my art to RedBubble, I was reminded that while I created pride flag versions of many of my non-snowflake patterns, I neglected to do so for this one, mostly due to having gotten overly busy at the time.
But hey, no time like pride month and the present to rectify that, so here we are! On the right, you can see examples of products decorated with these patterns. Fractal Forest Flake
The first time I showed my grandparents my symmetrical patterns, they were both impressed, but Grandpa expressed disappointment that none of them were his favorite color, forest green.
Since I was visiting them again this week, I decided that this time, I'd have a pattern ready just for Grandpa. Unfortunately, Google search gave me multiple different answers when I asked it what forest green looks like, so this turned out to be a little too light, but he was still happy with it.
The shape was inspired by a piece of advice I got from a fellow member of ProjectComment, who suggested that I try using fractals in one of my snowflakes. I'm still a bit unclear as to what constitutes a fractal - a core principle seems to be the same shape repeating itself at ever-smaller scales - but I THINK I made one.
This pattern was deliberately designed to look good when tiled; here's an example of what that looks like:

Carnival of Twisted Rainbows
I took a different approach with this pattern: instead of sticking with a single main hue, I started with red in the center, then added all the colors of the rainbow as I moved toward the tips, with some extra magenta diamonds at the end.

Snowflake Sunset
This was actually based on a quick snowflake doodle I did a while ago. I wanted it to be regal, elegant, yet vivid and vibrant at the same time.

Winter Woodland Wonder
I took a slightly different approach when drawing this snowflake; I knew what I wanted the outer border to look like, so I drew that first, then made up the rest as I went along.
I'd originally had an idea of what I wanted to put in the interior, but when I actually drew it, it didn't go well with the parts I'd already drawn, so I scrapped that idea and improvised. Snowy Cerulean Sea
I liked the idea of a lighter blue snowflake against a dark blue background, and I wanted to make another pattern with wider, more gently curved spokes and the intricate details on the inside instead of the outside, like I did with Starry Snow Spiral.
After I created the background gradient, I realized the way it went from lighter on top to darker on the bottom reminded me of the ocean, so I decided to add a wave pattern. Crystal Blossom Adrift
I especially love the color scheme on this one; I’m a sucker for blue.
I'd originally planned for the lighter purplish spokes to be the main part of this snowflake, with smaller and narrower additions in between. But then I added those wider, petal-like shapes behind the secondary spokes as an experiment, and liked the effect so much that I decided to keep it. Bladed Sky
I wanted to try a different look for my latest snowflake – something harsher, harder-edged, and with more straight lines instead of gentle curves. I also planned for it to have a bit more of a synthetic, technological feel.
One of the first things I decided was that I wanted to use the “stained glass” filter in Photoshop for the background, and while it took a bit of tinkering to get the size and shape I wanted for the “glass cells”, I think it complements the snowflake well. I’d originally wanted the lines of the cells to be whiter, but once I drew the snowflake I concluded that that would’ve been a bit too much white, so I decided not to make that change. One of my favorite things about this design is how the gradient makes different aspects of the border decorations pop, depending on what shade they’re being contrasted with. Crystal Aurora
I was watching Frozen, and it made me want to draw a snowflake. A few hours and several repetitions of various versions of Let It Go later, the snowflake is drawn, and I LOVE it; it's probably the most polished-looking pattern I've created so far.
I knew I wanted to have some smaller, blurrier snowflakes in the background, but for the frame, I was torn between snow clouds and an aurora. I'd recently seen another artist's drawing of a night-themed horse whose mane resembled a midnight snowfall with clouds, and it was mesmerizing, so that was a big temptation. But auroras were a repeating event in Frozen, and I liked the way my experiments with them looked, so I decided to stay on-theme. This pattern was a departure from my previous ones, in that I decided to try letting the spokes overlap a bit. In my other patterns, I kept the spokes much more separate, so I wanted to try something different this time, and I love the way it turned out.
