Chaotic Hearts, Pride Series is Now Available on Society6 and RedBubble

29/6/2019

Quite a while ago, I made a print-on-demand pattern called "Chaotic Hearts". While I was uploading my art to RedBubble, I was reminded that while I created pride flag versions of many of my non-snowflake patterns, I neglected to do so for this one, mostly due to having gotten overly busy at the time.

But hey, no time like pride month and the present to rectify that, so here we are!
Picture
Chaotic Hearts is available on coffee mugs, tapestries, pillows and more in my Society6 store and my RedBubble store.

Here are some examples of products adorned with this pattern:

Here are the RedBubble links to each version of the pattern and all its products:

Touchpad Doodle Dump: Visit to the Grandparents Edition

27/6/2019

While I was visiting my grandparents this week, I showed them some of my symmetrical patterns, and they started making art requests. These are the results, and the stories that go with them:
Picture
Grandpa asked me to draw a deer, which I attempted here - the key word being "attempted", given the lack of references in their internet-free house and the fact that I was doodling quickly with a touchpad. The result is anatomically terrible, but still oddly pretty. It's red because that's the color Grandma requested.
Picture
This picture started with Grandpa asking what I'd draw if I was making the decal for a vehicle's door, and then it snowballed from there. It began with lightning on a purple gradient, and then my grandparents asked for mountains, clouds, and a cabin with the lights on.

Grandpa also implied, but did not confirm, that he wanted me to strike the cabin with lightning.

Picture
The third picture is Grandma's second-ever attempt at digital art. The touchpad gave her some trouble - she's never owned a TV, computer, or smartphone of any kind - but I encouraged her to keep trying and showed her three different ways to make the touchpad draw, then I took a break to go to the washroom.

While I was in there, the world outside the washroom turned into an audio comedy routine of delight, confusion and alarm.  "Oh, it's doing it! Eeee! Oh, no, what did it do? Honey, where did it go? What did you do? Do that thing you did again."

By the time I left the bathroom, my grandparents had managed to accidentally zoom in to 9,000% magnification, they'd inadvertently opened a program I didn't even remember having on my computer, and Grandma had signed her name.

I am proud of her for continuing to try after her confusing and discouraging initial attempts to use the touchpad. Next time I visit, I'll try to remember to bring the mouse - maybe that will be easier for her.

Who knows - if I get her into digital art, she and Grandpa might even disprove my theory that they were going to go to their graves without ever owning a screen-bearing machine more complex than a phone with call display. :P It's never too late!

New Symmetrical Pattern: Fractal Forest Flake

25/6/2019

Picture
The first time I showed my grandparents my symmetrical patterns, they were both impressed, but Grandpa expressed disappointment that none of them were his favorite color, forest green.

Since I was visiting them again this week, I decided that this time, I'd have a pattern ready just for Grandpa. Unfortunately, Google search gave me multiple different answers when I asked it what forest green looks like, so this turned out to be a little too light, but he was still happy with it.

The shape was inspired by a piece of advice I got from a fellow member of ProjectComment, who suggested that I try using fractals in one of my snowflakes. I'm still a bit unclear as to what constitutes a fractal - a core principle seems to be the same shape repeating itself at ever-smaller scales - but I THINK I made one.

This pattern was deliberately designed to look good when tiled; here's an example of what that looks like:

If you want to learn how to use the brush I drew this with, as well as the technique I used to make it symmetrical, check out my tutorial here.

Page 44 of My "Undertale" Comic, "Just Cause", is Ready!

Poor baby. So little idea why this is happening, so quick to assume it's because they did something wrong, and so many old habits and beliefs they will need to unlearn if they're going to make it through this.

It doesn't help that their current opponent is one of the mentally weirder monsters in Undertale. The Vegetoid seems to have a sort of selective intelligence; it can speak a little, but it doesn't seem to be aware of this fact, and denies it every time it's spoken to.

It's smart enough to understand that a hand on the stomach can indicate hunger and that vegetable-shaped bullets resemble food, but not smart enough to realize that white bullets hurt people, and that its violent behavior can scare people away from touching ANY of its bullets, even the beneficial green ones.

Put all of this together, and it leaves Frisk in a dangerous position. The only way to placate the Vegetoid peacefully is to accept its "meal", but the thought of doing that brings up memories the poor kid doesn't want to relive. Especially not when their HP is low, and they don't yet know that they can self-resurrect.

Also, on a meta note, THAT RIBBON. I knew that ribbon was going to be trouble the moment I started adding it, and sure enough, I have nearly forgotten to put it in almost every panel where it appears. Heaven help me.

New Symmetrical Pattern: Carnival of Twisted Rainbows

15/6/2019

Picture
The idea for this pattern was to make the main structure in reverse rainbow order, with red in the middle and purple on the outer edge, then switch that around for the smaller decorations I used to fill it out.

The result was a pattern that was initially meant to be a snowflake, but by the time I was finished, it didn't really look like one aside from having 6 spokes.

For some reason it makes me think "carnival" - maybe because of the ribbon-like shapes and the parts that resemble hanging lights.  The curtains around the edges were added after I decided on the name, to go with the theme.

If you want to learn how to use the brush I drew this with, as well as the technique I used to make it symmetrical, check out my tutorial here.

New Art: Flying Above the Garden

Picture
I was listening to Celestial Garden by one of my favorite composers on YouTube, and it made me want to draw some flowers. Almost everything in this picture was drawn with the same brush I use for my snowflakes, except for a few spots where I used a different, soft-edged brush to adjust the shading.

It was a bit of a challenge coming up with enough different shapes to keep any of the large flowers from being repeats of the others, but thankfully Google was there with lists of different types of flowers. :)

If you want to learn how to use the brush I drew this with, as well as the technique I used to create the symmetrical flowers, check out my tutorial here.

The tutorial is geared toward drawing snowflakes, but the same brush/technique combo can be used to draw flowers, too. You can actually use it to create a fully shaded flower petal with a single stroke, once you've mastered it.

It's available on coffee mugs, tapestries, pillows and more in my Society6 store, and most of them are 25% off today (June 9, 2019).

Video Tutorial: How to Draw Symmetrical Snowflake Patterns in Krita

7/6/2019

Picture
For the last few months, I’ve been sharing symmetrical snowflake patterns with you. This hobby has turned out to be so relaxing, fun, and surprisingly easy that I wanted to give you the chance to learn how to do it, too.

So I took all the tools, tips and steps I use to create these patterns, and I put them together in a series of bite-size video tutorials and published them on SkillShare.

The class is 41 minutes long, and you can use this link to get an entire month of access for free! Go here to watch my snowflake tutorial.

On top of learning how to create symmetrical snowflakes, you’ll also discover how to sell these patterns as prints and physical merchandise like coffee cups, so you can turn this hobby into an income source if you want to.

I can’t wait to hear what you think of this class, and to see what kind of art you use it to create!

Also, if you know someone who you think would enjoy drawing symmetrical patterns, please share this link with them. I really appreciate it!
