Two of Farscape's Best Couples, in Two Music Videos

27/5/2014

I always loved the relationship between Zhaan and Stark. Two very spiritual, tormented souls, coming together into one of the most natural-feeling relationships in the whole Farscape series. Some of the other couples always seemed a bit thrown-together to me, but that one just fit.

Another thing I absolutely love is the song "Cosmic Love" by Florence + The Machine, which I discovered due to this wonderful AMV.

It's a hard song to make a music video for; while the tune and instrumentals of the chorus vary enough that it doesn't feel repetitive, the words of said chorus stay the same through all four of its appearances, so it was difficult to find fitting clips for all four repetitions. But it's a song I just can't get enough of; I've replayed the crap out of it, and it never gets old.

So when a person loves two things that much, and they fit together so well, of course one must find a way to put them together. Hence this music video.

Another couple I enjoy is Sikozu and Scorpius. Sure, I wasn't thrilled about the way she monopolized so much of his screentime, preventing the development of his other relationships, but if that had to be the case, at least the relationship that did develop was a very interesting one.

I liked the way she could look up to him but still completely hold her own, and I was happy that the relationship seemed to be largely based on genuine compatibility, rather than feeling like they were thrown together just because the series needed a romantic subplot.

When I saw this AMV, set to Katy Perry's "E.T.", I knew I just had to make a Scorpius/Sikozu MV out of it. It was such a perfect fit for their edgy, dangerous relationship - how could I not?

I hope you enjoyed the music videos. If you did, I'd love to hear from you:

An Awesome Scene That Wasn't Supposed to Exist

20/5/2014

Have you ever had one of those times when you were writing, and a scene wasn't supposed to happen, but it happened, and it was awesome?

Picture

I'm getting near the end of Heroic Lies, and I'd planned for a character to simply disappear (temporarily), and then be returned. The actual scene in which he was forcibly removed from the building wasn't in the outline; his failure to interact with another character was actually a plothole that I noticed and fixed at the last moment.

But then, on a whim, I decided to write that scene, and I'm really glad I did.

The interactions between him and his abductor gave so much insight into the dynamics that had been playing out between them throughout the book. It also took the glimpses that had been shown of the kidnapper's personality, and turned those subtle images into a glaring, vivid display.

The scene was stirring, sickening, cruel... and if it does its job, it will make you angry, and you'll be rooting all the harder for the victim to finally break free.

I'm really happy with the way this book is turning out so far, and I'm looking forward to sharing it with you.

Did You Notice These Plot Holes?

13/5/2014

Ah, plot holes and logic bombs. A storyteller can do their best, proofread or edit their work over and over again, and still miss a little detail that's obvious to someone who has less to pay attention to.

After all, the storyteller has to notice everything about their work, and then create the story over the course of weeks or months, which means they have plenty of time to forget about details that would be obvious to a person who absorbs the story over the course of mere hours.

And then, once the story is published, those plot holes are out there for all the world to see, and the chances are pretty good that the creator won't be the first to notice them.

And then there are people like me. The people who gleefully make things worse by turning those plot holes into a video and setting them to funny music so everyone can laugh at them.

If you're a fellow Farscape fan, I think you'll have fun with this. Plot holes, logic bombs, and one vicious verbal burn, all packed into 8.5 hilarious minutes.

Enjoy!

Holy Foreshadowing!

Have you ever read, watched or played one of those stories where you absolutely could not BELIEVE how much foreshadowing they slipped past you?

My brother told me that every line of dialogue in the first episode of Madoka Magica was important. They still managed to tell me half the story in the first episode without spoiling a thing.

He also commented several times on the amount of unbelievably blatant foreshadowing they put into Bioshock Infinite, and while granted, I did see ONE of the Big Reveals coming, the rest caught me completely off guard.

Picture
You'd have had to be a prophet to see most of it coming. Except that they spelled it all out. But you still won't see it coming.
I just finished playing Infinite this weekend, and I seriously have to play that game again. Soon. Just to see exactly how much of the plot they painted on their rear ends and waved in front of my face without me realizing it.

Someday, I want to write a story like that.

I think I've figured out how they did it: make the main character believe that everything is what it seems, and write the story with the mindset that things are the way you want the audience to think they are. Do that, and you can drop in all the hints you want to on the side, but only the canniest will catch on.

Have you ever experienced a story like that? Obviously, I don't want any specific spoilers, but what would you say is the story that caught you the most off guard?
