Undertale Handplates Fan Comic: He Touched The Butt

30/11/2017

Ah, that moment when you realize late Wednesday night that you forgot to schedule a blog post for Tuesday, and end up publishing it on Thursday instead. Sorry about that!

Anywho...

Out of all the many Undertale AUs out there, Zarla's Handplates is currently my favorite. It's deep, emotional and well-drawn, has great dialogue, and really makes the reader think about the different moral viewpoints the characters present. (Fair warning: If you're going to read it, prepare for pain, anger, and a potent urge to decapitate a fictional skeleton.)

It also has some goofy side comics, like the one where Gaster found a sexually explicit fanfiction Alphys had written, involving herself, him, and several other monsters.

This sparked a discussion about the logistics of Alphys dropping and possibly reattaching her tail, which resulted in me speculating about this interaction, which resulted in this picture.

Such a serious and poignant AU, and my first (but probably not last) fan art for it is a goofy one-panel about Alphys using a Finding Nemo reference while freaking out about Gaster (almost) touching her butt.

As a bonus for those of you who are familiar with this AU: Alphys is hiding in the same closet Gaster locked her in in this joke comic.

Undertale Fan Comic: Just Cause, Page 20

I DID IT. I actually freaking did it.

27 panels worth of fully shaded webcomic in two weeks. (OK, so technically I'm a few hours over that mark, but I haven't gone to bed yet, so I'll pretend it's still Tuesday.)

I feel dead from the neck up. I should be in bed.

WHO CARES. I DID IT.

Go to bed, Steph.

In case you have trouble reading the calendar, Sans has marked the days on which their readings indicate that a reset happened. One of the days is marked as having had two resets take place on it, and another is marked "ANOTHER reset".

At the bottom, in the spaces where the dates for the next month would be, he scratched some of them out in frustration and wrote "Probably never gonna happen".

He isn't generally the type to cry or get overtly emotional, but I figure it probably happens on rare occasions, and the day he concludes that he and everyone he loves will stay trapped in a horrible time loop forever seems like as good a time as any to have one last cry before he emotionally tunes out.

Undertale Undyne Fan Art: "The Heroine Appears" and "Please Don't Noogie the Skeleton"

Sometimes, a picture is too good to be confined to a comic panel. Especially when there will be other elements, like dialogue and other characters, blocking the reader's view.

In page 19 of Just Cause, I had two such panels, so today I'm sharing them in all their full-sized, unobstructed glory.

The Heroine Appears

Picture

Most fan art I've seen depicts Undyne's Undying armor mostly in black or dark grey, and I did the same the first time I drew her. But this time, I wanted to add in some of her friends' colors, to show that she was thinking of them when she created this form for herself.

The gold on her belt and gloves is the same shade as Asgore's hair and shoulder guards, and the hearts on her gloves are Alphys' yellow rimmed with the orange of Papyrus' scarf.

The red in her armor symbolizes the determination that enabled her to drag herself back from the brink of death for one last glorious fight.

Please Don't Noogie The Skeleton!

Picture

Judging by her snow wrestling tendencies, Undyne and other people's boundaries are not the best combination. But Papyrus will always forgive her and go right on being her cool friend, after he's done yelling in futile protest.

And then he will go and pass the noogie on to his brother, in a much angstier piece of fan art.

Undertale Fan Comic: "Just Cause", Page 19

It's WAY later in the day than I'd planned, but the 19th page of my Undertale fan comic, Just Cause, is ready! Enjoy!

Aaaand we're back to Sans and his mid-battle contemplations. This is one of those pages where there's a lot of exposition and recapping to be done, lest I spend a ludicrous amount of time drawing every single fight, and I'm doing my best to make it feel natural instead of being a bland infodump.

If you're curious about the platform of harmless magic in Sans' attack... I actually am, too.

In his in-game battle, there are turns where the floor is coated in damaging bone attacks, but there are platforms you can jump between to avoid certain death, and I'm not sure what in-story explanation there is for why Sans would include or allow those platforms in his attacks.

Possibilities include:

1. The human's soul power interfering with his magic somehow - a theory supported by the fact that he CAN do an undodgeable and lethal attack if and only if you let down your guard.

2. His blue magic, which causes gravity to affect the soul, somehow disrupting the ambient gravity in a way that caused debris on the battlefield to float around. Given the lack of clutter in the Last Corridor, that seems less likely, unless his attacks were chipping pieces off the pillars.

3. His reluctance to fight. Sans won't engage you in battle unless you leave him no other sane option, and monsters' bodies and attacks are attuned to their souls, so it could be that Sans is simply so inherently nonviolent that even when he's trying to use his full power, there are fragments of hesitation or reluctance in his magic, manifesting as platforms that can protect his opponent.

Personally, I suspect it's a combination of 1 and 3, but it's totally up to players' individual interpretation.

On a lighter note, if you complete the game after befriending several key monsters, but without completing all the requirements for the best ending, you get a phone call from all your friends. During that call, Papyrus asks Undyne not to noogie the phone or the skeleton.

Given how much she openly enjoys driving him crazy, I could see her stopping in the middle of a training session to give him a noogie.

One thing Sans, Undyne and Flowey can all agree on: messing with goofy, melodramatic and persnickety skeletons is fun.
