New Undertale Fan Comic and Wallpaper

27/9/2016

When it comes to Undertale fan art, I've been Miss Productive recently. Not only did I make a new fan comic starring Toriel, Sans and Frisk, but I also created a wallpaper for my ongoing Undertale comic, Just Cause.

You can see both of them below, and download the wallpaper if you choose. But if you haven't completed the game yet, beware of spoilers!

Enjoy!

Fan Comic:
The Moment You Realize

Picture

Poor Toriel really seems to have a habit of getting attached to people with tiny health bars. No wonder she's always so worried and overprotective.

Sans especially must terrify her sometimes - at least Frisk can take a few hits before dying.

I wonder if Frisk ever told her about their time-travel-based immortality, and assured her that they would be all right.

I was a bit torn while making this; part of me was saying "You should spend this time working on Just Cause instead", while another part was saying, "I want to draw this today, and if I turn Just Cause into an obligation that keeps me from drawing what I want to draw, I'm going to get sick of drawing it."

There's also the fact that Just Cause pages take time, due to the number of panels and complexity of shading, and I don't want to keep you waiting that long between art pieces. ^_^

Not that any of that stopped me from completing the most complex panel in the current chapter's second page between the time I wrote the above thoughts, and the time when I was ready to publish this blog post, haha.

Still, I find it reassuring to know that I can create and publish a piece of art within a single relatively short drawing session.

Wallpaper:
Bad Memories

Picture

This is the fourth panel of the second page of my ongoing Undertale comic, Just Cause. Partway through mapping it out, I realized it would make a good wallpaper, so that's what I decided to do.

Frisk is on a rampage, and Sans has a whole new collection of terrible memories that he hopes will soon be erased. But if he wants this awful timeline to disappear, our resident lazybones is going to have to work for it.

If you'd like to add some extra tragedy and depression to your computer, you can click here to download the full-sized version of the wallpaper.

15 Short Poems and Haikus About Editing

20/9/2016

As every author knows, editing can be painful. Last week, Mica Kole hosted a #FriDare event on Twitter, daring authors to write a short poem or haiku about their negative feelings about editing.

After an hour or so of waxing poetical about the horrors of turning a first draft into something worthy of publishing, I realized I'd gotten some good material out of my whining about fixing bad material, so I decided to share it with you.

(At least, I hope it's good? *GASP* What if this, too, needed a round of editing? Noooooooooooooo...)

1.
Thought I was better
Than to make a first draft like
This mess on my screen

2.
Laptop arcing through the sky
Edits make you wonder why
First-draft writers even try
When the result makes you cry

3.
Run-on sentence here
And too much description there
Too little action

4.
#FriDare poetry, #amdrawing edition:

5.
It's the right word
It's in the right place
But it's in in duplicate
My palm's on my face

6.
Spent too much time with this book
I just want it to be done
On 4th consecutive look
Editing's no longer fun

7.
Could swear I changed this phrase before
Now I want to change it more
Will it ever look quite right?
Ten more tries and then it might

8.
Right word, wrong place
Spell-check didn't see
Palm on my face
What if there could be
To my disgrace
Dozens more of these?

9.
Read the phrase again
Didn't register first time
I should go to bed

10.
Please tell me that this is good
Can't see as a reader would
First impression is long gone
What if everything is wrong?

11.
Headdesk, headdesk, what's that sound?
It's the fourth and final round
Editing the same novel
How can there by typos still?!

12.
How'd that furniture get over there?
Because I didn't make note of where
Every item ought to be
Back to editing with me

13.
Fourth round of edits
First two lost by accident
Hate starting over >_<
(This haiku is brought to you by a tragic case of file corruption.)

14.
Three words here
Three words wrong
As I feared:
Phrase too long
There's way too much description
I know better, yet did it again

15.
Wall of dialogue
No action between the lines
Must stop doing that

Bonus haiku!

Complaining is done
The blog post is now complete
Back to other tasks

Undertale Fan Comic: Just Cause, Chapter 1

12/9/2016

So, I'm finally doing it. I'm taking the plunge, and starting a long-running Undertale comic that's been on my heart for a while now.

This comic started as a fanfiction, which is currently partly written and partly just notes on key scenes. I originally planned to finish the fanfic first, and then start the comic, but there are so many scenes I'm just dying to draw... scenes that won't happen for SO MANY CHAPTERS... GUAAAAH...

On the upside, the first page of the comic is complete, and you can see it below. :)

Creation notes:

I've switched from drawing the outlines first, to creating a color blob in the shape of whatever I'm drawing, then adding shading, THEN adding the outline, because I'm sick of seeing my nice, smooth outlines get turned jagged in the process of filling them in. -_-

As a result, instead of the drawing process going 'outline of the whole comic' -> 'outline and base color' -> 'shaded finished product', I'm completing the shaded version of each panel, then going on to the next panel.

Because of this, my future WIPs will generally be less sketches, and more segments of pages in progress. I think it's better this way; with this method, my Patrons get to see the panels in all their finished glory from the start, while still getting see them ASAP.

Undertale Fan Art: A Disproportionate Challenge

6/9/2016

Deep in the Underground's Waterall area, there is a bird. Deep inside this bird, there's the determination to carry anyone across the gap, and never give up.

Unfortunately, elsewhere the Underground, there is also a monster big enough to challenge that bird's steadfast commitment.

This is my first time drawing Asgore. I didn't realize just how much his outfit changes from one in-game sprite to another until I started using those sprites as a reference for a comic. -.-

But while I found him to be a bit of a challenge to draw, I do love the color scheme. Asgore and Waterfall look so pretty together.

I have a few more comic ideas for him - there are so many ways in which he and his subjects could be cute and/or funny together - but I have a long-running Undertale fan comic that's been shining in my mind for ages, just waiting to be drawn, and that's my main art project for now. I look forward to sharing it with you!
